Crossing Cultures

Mark and Mary Doerksen at the Giraffe Centre,
Karen, Nairobi

Today we travelled with the Doerksen family and our team mates, the Godwin family, to the Karen side of Nairobi to visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Giraffe Centre. Over the past three days, we've been walking through orientation with the Doerksen's as they prepare for the volunteer work in Kenya.

in the Masai Market

On Friday, the Doeksen's had a great time at the weekly Masai Market, bartering over local crafts and kurios. This is a very different experience from shopping in Canada.

Mary at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

On of the fun parts of life in Kenya, is the incredible wildlife. We had a great time meeting orphaned baby elephants and feeding giraffe today.

Nana and Aaron at Hebesha Ethiopian Restaurant

One of the great challenges with crossing cultures is getting use to the different smells, tastes, and experiences of sharing food. We brought the Doerksen's to a local Ethiopian restaurant to experience a traditional Cushitic meal eaten without any cutlery.

We want to thank you for praying for us and for volunteers like the Doerksens who are stepping out of their comfort zones and serving in places and cultures not their own. Please remember them as they join us this week in Eastleigh.

  1. Looks like fun but must take a bit of getting use to. Take care
